Did you watch the Democratic debate last night?
The field of viable Democrat candidates thinned significantly after the first of the 2020 Democratic Debates. Right before the debates, I wrote in the Daily Beast, "Can Joe Biden survive the debates without being dragged in their direction?"
If you didn't see the debate last night, here's a spoiler alert: the answer is a resounding "No."
Biden's messaging playbook looked a lot like the one Hillary used in 2008 - elevate yourself as an experienced incumbent, protect your lead, and play a prevent defense. Hillary lost that election, and Biden looks like he might be in similar danger after several bruising exchanges last night, specifically with Kamala Harris.
Speaking of Senator Harris, it was pretty clear by the end of the night that she won this round of the Democratic Debates. Her well-executed attack of Biden's record on civil rights visibly threw off the front-runner, and may even spell the beginning of his political death. Democrats will want to nominate someone who will do to Trump what Kamala did to Biden.
However, the biggest takeaway from the first two debates wasn't who won or who lost, but how far the Democrats are racing to the progressive left. In the last two nights, Democrats have advocated unanimous and unfettered support for abortion (including for a trans female), decriminalizing border crossings, talk of gun buybacks, and calls to end private health insurance.
The Democrats are now danger of moving so far left that they can’t win the electoral college. This is how Donald Trump gets re-elected.
