The most interesting 4th of July we've had in a long time
Happy Independence Day! I hope you had an enjoyable, restful holiday celebrating the 243rd birthday of our country with your family and friends.
And, boy, what a holiday it was. Where to start? The unprecedented and controversial participation of our chief executive at this year's July 4th celebrations in D.C.? Or, perhaps, Nike's equally contentious and last-minute decision to pull a special shoe design featuring the Betsy Ross flag?
However, the biggest surprise of the day was definitely Justin Amash's declaration of independence. Choosing July 4th to announce your liberation from the Grand Old Party is both clever and poetic.
While I don't agree with everything he wrote in his Washington Post swan song, I’m ready to go rogue. There’s a reason why I don’t self-identify as a Republican (though I am a proud conservative). I didn’t leave the party; the party left me.
One thing I absolutely agree with Amash on; Congress and the Republican Party have become "little more than a formality to legitimize outcomes dictated by the president, the speaker of the House, and the Senate majority leader."
For having the courage to break with a decadent and depraved Republican Party, I say, "Bravo, Justin. Now go run for president."
